Maryland State Police
First Sergeant Mitch Dinterman, Assistant Commander of the Forensic Sciences Division, presented the STARLIMS implementation at the Maryland State Police.
The Forensic Sciences Division runs the largest forensic lab in the state of Maryland, and serves the entire department of state police as well as more than 100 local agencies. Working out of one central lab and two satellites, the division processes 18,000 evidence submissions each year. Short turnaround times are essential in their work, and certain submissions, such as drug samples, must be processed within 30 days.
The STARLIMS implementation has been integrated into the division’s entirely paperless environment. It is used for evidence intake and maintenance in a wide range of disciplines: ballistics, latent prints, crime scenes, photography, biology/serology, chemistry, etc. In addition, STARLIMS helps monitor employee training and performance, and to oversee equipment and materials.
One of the most important benefits of the STARLIMS implementation has been acceleration of turnaround times. This has been achieved while adhering to regulatory and quality assurance requirements including ISO 17025 compliance. In addition, STARLIMS enables personnel working in over a hundred locations statewide to receive up-to-date information online—vastly improving the speed and accuracy of the information being disseminated.
In summary, First Sergeant Mitch Dinterman said, “Most of our units are excited about this project. I believe in the system. I think it is going to help our division immensely.”
