US Air Force
The STARLIMS implementation at the United States Air Force was presented by Jeremy Colson, Project Manager at the Air Force Petroleum Agency (AFPA). Among other responsibilities, AFPA performs quality testing of aviation fuels, missile fuels, lubricants. It serves not only the US Air Force, but also multiple private and governmental organizations worldwide.
AFPA must comply with Department of Defense regulations, and increasingly stringent certification and accreditation requirements had rendered their access-based LIMS obsolete. In 2005, Mr. Colson and his team began a search for a new LIMS. They looked for a solution based on mature, proven technology and globally accepted standards—which could meet and surpass the challenges of working in an extremely distributed environment. They wanted an out-of-the-box solution that would reflect the strict regulations of the US Air Force and Department of Defense. And they looked for a solution “beyond our needs” which would continue serving the agency far into the future. STARLIMS was selected thanks to features such as complete audit trail functionality, flexible visual interfaces, global Internet access, and easy integration with other systems. Another factor was the ability to present complex workflows in an easy-to-use format, which shortens the learning curve for new hires.
Mr. Colson explains that STARLIMS was selected “after customer satisfaction evaluations, and also due to their history of achievements.” He adds, “I am amazed at how enthusiastic people have been. They sometimes call to ask me if I am ready to deploy at their lab.” The STARLIMS solution comprises a centralized server farm, which is connected to all six labs via Internet Explorer®. It provides instant online access to 3,000 customers worldwide. This means that customers can log in and view their results online, rather than querying busy lab personnel. Mr. Colson estimates that this has saved half a man year.
In summary, Mr. Colson notes that STARLIMS can bring together all the elements of a successful LIMS project, and “they also have the willingness to fine-tune the product to meet all your needs.” He adds, “Without a doubt, I would do it again.”
