The
ORIMULSION® Power System
After
bringing control to the PDVSA ORIMULSION® Shipping Terminal at Jose in
Venezuela, StarLIMS was selected to complete the control process with an
implementation at the Orimulsion production plant at Morichal. The
solution will be interfaced with the ABB, Advant Enterprise Historian
and INTESA will provide overall integration services for this project.
Composed of 30% water and 70% natural Bitumen, it is used commercially
by utilities around the world as an economical alternative to heavy
fuels, coal or nuclear fuel used in electricity generation. ORIMULSION®
is being used for electricity production in several countries, including
Denmark, Japan, China, Italy and Canada.
Over
1.2 trillion barrels of natural bitumen exist in the Orinoco Belt, a
volume greater than 50% of the world's estimated fuel oil reserves. With
present technology, the economically recoverable reserves are estimated
at 267 billion barrels. The reserves of bitumen were discovered over 50
years ago; however it is due to technology developed in 1979 that this
rich resource is now available for use. PDVSA developed means
to extract and transport the bitumen by making it more fluid. The
process led to the creation of the product now known as Orimulsion,
INTESA is the Latin American
Transformation Company. A consulting organization in information
technology that offers integrated services throughout Latin America.
PDVSA carries out exploration and production to develop oil and gas, as
well as production of bitumen and heavy crude from the Orinoco Belt, and
manufacture of Orimulsion. PDVSA holds a leading position among the
world refiners, and its direct manufacturing and marketing network
covers mainly Venezuela, the Caribbean, the United States and Europe. It
is also active in the areas of petrochemical production, research and
technology development.
ABB is
a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility
and industry customers to improve their
performance while lowering their environmental impact.
