Unlike many other medical laboratory LIMS, STARLIMS has no pre-defined hierarchy. Users are able to define the system to fit in within their own laboratory structure. Users are able to decide whether or not to set up the system to reflect the historical format of separate disciplines, combine some disciplines (e.g. Clinical Chemistry and Hematology to form Blood Sciences), have one global laboratory or any combination of these.
Should your laboratory structure and organization change, then that is no problem – STARLIMS allows you to change the system without losing any historical data.
One of the major challenges facing medical laboratories today is the extraction of data in a meaningful format to support the laboratory process and management procedures. Historically, laboratories have had to resort to usually expensive third party solutions. STARLIMS provides several means of extracting and showing data as part of the integrated system.
The STARLIMS is designed to keep personnel in the lab up-to-date with real-time information. Each user in the organization has unique information requirements and needs access to dissimilar sets of data based on the user’s position and ongoing real time processes. This is where the STARLIMS Dashboard is applied. The Dashboard is an intelligent notification and content delivery engine based on user-defined profiles fitted to the specific needs and authority level of each user. The STARLIMS Dashboard is visible on each user’s desktop.
STARLIMS XML-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) displays a set of gauges used to monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The content of each zone is tied to the Role and User ID of the user. Standard management/workload reports can also be defined and accessed from the Dashboard.
The Dashboard is used proactively to show the laboratory processes on a day to day basis.
Query by Example
STARLIMS has an integral report writer/inquiry tool – Query by Example (QBE). This is a method of creating queries using examples based on comparing database fields to a text string, number, or range of numbers. Query by Example (QBE) is particularly useful as a search tool. You can create a Report template can be created specific to the laboratory’s needs by further filtering information using a query. A query is a request for specific information using selection criteria according to tables and fields in the management system database.
QBE is used to create QBE templates that can be used for ad hoc queries that can be used in conjunction with the integrated Crystal Reports. QBE provides a powerful capability to create complex queries without the need to write SQL statements.
QBE also greatly increases the flexibility of Crystal Reports by providing a template driven way for the user to dynamically adjust the query criteria used to run a report.
Advanced Analytics allows users to take their laboratory data and processes and use powerful visualizations that more clearly illustrate key activities to predictive analysis capabilities. Processes can be mapped out through innovative charts and graphs to find out where bottlenecks may be occurring and help improve efficiency. Through predictive analysis, users can dig into their data to identify trends and patterns to help make decisions.
The module is provided with dashboards but allows users to create their own custom dashboards and visualisations according to the needs of their laboratory. Laboratory visualisations can be accessed anywhere, on any device, including smartphones and tablets.
