ISP Chemicals

ISP Chemicals is a leading global supplier of specialty chemicals and performance-enhancing products for a wide variety of personal care, pharmaceutical, food, beverage, and industrial applications. ISP produces more than 400 specialty chemicals, which it markets and sells worldwide. Ron Burchett has been involved with LIMS at ISP for over 15 years, and currently serves as Information Services Application Manager. He was responsible for vendor selection and implementation of a new LIMS at the company’s 12 facilities.
 
ISP was forced to look for a new solution because their Lab/UX and LabManager LIMS had become obsolete. Key selection criteria included: out-of-the-box functionality, harmonization between all ISP sites, easy client support, interfaces with Empower, ERP and Data Warehouse, configuration capabilities, and compatibility with Microsoft SQL and .NET. In addition, the selection team was looking for a solution that would carry ISP into the future, supporting dynamic lab processes and business requirements. After a ten-month search and negotiations with three top vendors, STARLIMS was selected.
 
Referring to STARLIMS’s recently introduced SDMS module, Mr. Burchett noted that, “document management is key. We’ve got to get our arms around unstructured data. As far as disk space and difficulty dealing with it, this STARLIMS function is critical.” He also mentioned “the beauty of the STARLIMS Designer tool. Anything that is not there out of the box can be created. But it can be done in such an easy way by people who are modern-day programmers working with Java script and .NET.”

Mr. Burchett also mentioned that STARLMS V10 is being used to create a single harmonized system for 15 sites. Tests, calculations, sample descriptions, sample lifecycle events (login, delivery, receipt, testing, approval) and more will be integrated into a single web-based system
